Reality is an illusion, and we know because “I want to get off MR. BONES WILD RIDE.” RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (RCT2) is the classic theme park management simulator from Chris Sawyer, one of the most nostalgic, as well as optimized and creative games of all time. And yet, while many video essays have told you its optimization comes from being coded in machine language, there’s another trick RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 pulls; the player is part of RCT2’s efficiency. Through a minimal system of limitation and restriction, followed by reward, the game sets just enough challenge to make player decisions feel important, creating flow and immersion, despite many of the options having no real control. Because the player comes into the game with the intent and goal to create a good theme park, Chris Sawyer had no need to code such restrictions and control the player, and instead allowed suggestion, their perception, to create a sense of realism and immersion. RCT’s strange reality is a trick of our own motivations, the audience's intent and desire. However, this strange reality can be easily broken once we understand this, such as with challenge runs and speed runs, like those by Marcel Vos, a fantastic YouTuber. Breaking the classic game in depth, he’s found the false limits of the game and created his own, beating scenarios with only one tile, making the longest coaster ever (the universe coaster), finding the most profitable and efficient rides through exploits, and much more. These creative constraints have proved something important; the best limits are the ones we set, the most fun the fun that we make. In this way, breaking the reality of RollerCoaster Tycoon provides an important lesson that this analysis video essay will cover.
