UCF Football: Derek Gainous thankful for 'role model' Richie Grant

UCF safety Derek Gainous knows he has some big shoes to fill. With Richie Grant and Aaron Robinson set to depart as seniors - both are currently preparing for the Senior Bowl - Gainous will be looked upon to assume a bigger leadership role in the secondary. The junior safety has been particularly impacted by Grant, who will end his UCF career as a three-time selection to the All-AAC First Team. "That's a role model, on and off the field," Gainous said of Grant. "On the field he set the standard. He did what most guys want to do at this level. In terms of off the field, he brought us together. Him being in his position, a fifth-year player who was wondering if he wanted to come back (in 2020), he stuck around and helped guide us and helped not only myself but other teammates become better leaders on the defensive side so we know what to do and how to approach certain situations.
