Vibe Coding: Metalanguaging Designs for EFL Student AI Literacy This video introduces a vibe coding learning design created to help students learn English as a foreign language by building software through natural language interactions with AI. The authors propose a human-AI metalanguaging framework that focuses on three critical dimensions: talking to AI through prompt engineering, talking through AI by negotiating authorship, and talking about AI via mental models. Through a case study of two students, the paper illustrates how different prompting strategies and perceptions of technology lead to varying degrees of success in application development. While one student successfully used structured, detailed instructions to create a functional tool, the other struggled with conversational, iterative dialogue and technical barriers. The study ultimately argues that educators must provide explicit scaffolding in these three linguistic dimensions to foster effective student agency and AI literacy. Such instruction helps learners move beyond simple chatbot use toward becoming purposeful designers of their own educational technology.
