I'd been on something of a Metheny roll with my shares, and one One Truth Band share later, here's another from 2 months later in that project's life. I took a quick listen to this as I prepped the recent SUNY Stony Brook share, and WOW! This is one of those truly amazing audience shares that occasionally came out of the 70's. They're pretty rare in my experience, but the better of them can blow some of the boards and FM's from those days out of the water. Whoever captured this show must've had really nice equipment, and they certainly knew what they were doing (except for sitting near the occasional cougher!). I grabbed this in 2010 when it was upped here by Uncle Meat, and that seems to have been the only time it's run here according to the dimebot archive. I've pasted in unclemeat's source info below this. I don't have the photos he referred to, but BB deserves some big props for this. Not sure at all how/why John so quickly shifted rhythm sections from OTB 1 to this OTB 2, but they definitely didn't waste much time in heading out on the road with the former Jan Hammer guys. This would be the group that was about to record the Electric Dreams album, which remains one of my favorite releases from John. None of that material features here, and that album and tour after it would also include former Weather Report percussionist, Alyrio Lima. The program here sees them still playing a couple of things from the Johnny McLaughlin Electric Guitarist album along with a nod to the MO and Shakti that carried over from OTB 1. Here there are a few more overt solo features for drums (during Friendship), and later on for keys and bass. Some more specific things are played that referenced Shakti, such as Kriti, which starts things off, and the various melodic themes from Shakti during what I've termed the "Shakti Medley". That includes bits of Joy, La Danse du Bonheur, Get Down and Sruti, and Lotus Feet (I've probably missed a few others). The John solo that morphs into a duo with Stu Goldberg references Blue in Green, St. Thomas, and the French national anthem. The bass solo ends with La Mere de la Mer from the MO's Trilogy. The show also includes Meeting of the Spirits, Sanctuary, and You Know You Know from the MO. The encore is purely konnakol. It's a very eclectic set. The only thing I did to the files from Uncle Meat was to re-track things in Audacity into the form seen above. There was some sort of break at about the 8:30 point in the Shakti Medley before the performance continued. No way of knowing how much music was lost there. Be sure to check the samples below to hear just how good this audience capture was. Many thanks to BB and Uncle Meat for this." Thanks to BB, Uncle Meat and jswetch.
