"Secret Love" - belated tribute to Doris Day who died May 13th, 2019, aged 97 - I’ve just found out, been on holiday. This is is a song composed by Sammy Fain (music) and Paul Francis Webster (lyrics) for Calamity Jane, a 1953 musical film in which it was sung by Doris Day in the title role. It reached No. 1 on both the Billboard and Cash Box charts in the US and also in the UK. "Secret Love" has subsequently been recorded by a wide range of artists, becoming a C&W hit firstly for Slim Whitman and later for Freddy Fender, with the song also becoming an R&B hit for Billy Stewart, whose version also reached the Top 40 as did Freddy Fender's. In the U.K., "Secret Love" would become the career record of Kathy Kirby via her 1963 remake of the song, which reached No. 4 in the UK charts. The melody bears a slight resemblance to the opening theme of Schubert's A-major piano sonata, D.664. Slim Whitman's version of "Secret Love" reached No. 2 on the C&W chart in Billboard magazine in the spring of 1954. Both the Moonglows and the Orioles covered "Secret Love" for the r&b market. Other versions by: Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Billy Eckstine, Sinead O’Connor, Dinah Washington, Connie Francis. Lyrics Once I had a secret love That lived within the heart of me All too soon my secret love Became impatient to be free So I told a friendly star The way that dreamers often do Just how wonderful you are And why I am so in love with you Now I shout it from the highest hills Even told the golden daffodils At last my heart's an open door And my secret love's no secret anymore Once I had a secret love That lived within the heart of me All too soon my secret love Became impatient to be free Now I shout it from the highest hills Even told the golden daffodils At last my heart's an open door And my secret love's no secret anymore
