All-Chopin Cello/Piano Music Faculty Recital October 1, 2017 Colorado Mesa University Love Recital Hall The left hand of this popular prelude (originally for solo piano) strongly evokes cello. It is therefore not surprising that Chopin's friend, August Franchomme (1808-1884), arranged it for cello and piano. That arrangement (an undated public domain manuscript available on IMSLP: https://imslp.org/wiki/Special:Imagef...) was the template for this performance, with one major difference: mm. 1-21 (all but the coda) were repeated so as to introduce original countermelodies (listen at 1:31). This extended form makes it more of a true duet "dialog" between the cello and piano. Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin (pen-named George Sand: 1804-1876) was a French female writer with whom Chopin had a turbulent relationship. She felt that this piece "... precipitates the soul into frightful depression." Sand was tragically prescient, for this nostalgic melancholy prelude was played on the organ at Chopin's funeral after his untimely death in 1849. Hans von Bülow (1830-1894) aptly nicknamed the work "Tolling Bells." Another great pianist, Alfred Cortot (1877-1962), dubbed it "Homesickness." Edward Dannreuther (1844-1905) waa a pianist and writer who was personally acquainted with several of Chopin's students. In his book, "Musical Ornamentation" [Part II, Chapter XIV, p. 168], he cites the piano's repeated notes in the right hand as Chopin's way of evoking a kind of "bebung" effect [ see https://www.8notes.com/school/lessons... and https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Dict... ]. --------- • Highly recommended books on Chopin's performance practice: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/... https://manducamusic.com/shop/chopin-... • Other Yun videos: / @kristenyeon-jiyun7944 https://kristenyeonjiyun.com/performa... • Other Houle cello arrangements: • Mendelssohn: Venetian Boat Song, Op 30/6 –... • Schumann Romance Op 28/2 (cello/piano Houl... • Marjorie Burgess: Along the Esplanade/Walt... • Marjorie Burgess: Autumn Song/Cloud Palace... • Marjorie Burgess: Pea Soup – Sam Smith, ce... __________________________ MY PASSION FOR CREATIVITY In 2001, I founded the Festival for Creative Pianists, a unique online and in-person venue.
