China's Wuhan begins construction of a mega tunnel through the historical reserve 武汉开始建设穿越历史保护区的大型隧道

The tunnel will adopt single-tube double-deck structure that can better utilize the underground space and have less effect on the surface structures. It will run through the ancient district of Wuchang that houses over 500 heritage buildings including the landmark Yellow Crane Tower, or Huanghelou. In addition, the 730-meters-long karst development area under the ancient district is expected to be another engineering challenge. Advanced tunnel-boring machine with a maximum boring diameter of 16.03 meters will be used to address the problems. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
