[EP-03] Scholars Said Jericho Wasn't There. Then a 2025 Book Found the Next City Up.

Textbooks taught it. Documentaries repeated it. Kathleen Kenyon's 1952 excavation became the standard — and scholars largely didn't look again. Then they looked at the wrong layer. In 1990, Bryant Wood reopened Kenyon's records and found that her pottery analysis had been conducted at the outer edge of the site — not the center. The absence wasn't evidence. It was a misread location. In 1995, radiocarbon dating placed the destruction layer at 1410 BC — squarely within the range of the biblical Conquest. In 2023, Lorenzo Nigro's team at Sapienza University identified a previously unexamined city layer above the ruins: City V, dated between 1450 and 1400 BC. On December 30, 2025, Bryan Windle published Joshua's Jericho — the first book to consolidate this emerging hypothesis. This episode traces the physical evidence across three excavations: • The outer wall collapsed outward — away from the city (not inward, as a breach would require) • A fire ash layer exceeding one meter runs across the entire site • Six grain jars, untouched and unlooted, excavated by Kenyon herself — now at the British Museum • Radiocarbon date: 1410 BC And then — one word in the original Hebrew text. Wat·tip·pol ha·cho·mah tach·te·ha. (Joshua 6:20) English translations render it "fell down flat." But the Hebrew is more precise: fell downward, straight in place, from top to bottom — in its own position. That is exactly what Garstang's excavation photographs show. The text drew the photograph.
