Can I Use Drywall In A Shower? - Ask The Tile Contractor Series

A question I get asked regarding showers is about what kind of drywall to use. The best advice I can give is to not use drywall in a shower. We don’t use it on our showers and the industry would recommend that you don’t either. Even the drywall manufacturers say not to use their products in the shower area, and I do recommend following their directions. I’m not sure why contractors think drywall (be it green, purple or blue) is acceptable, but it isn’t. Moisture and mold resistant doesn’t mean moisture proof. With today’s homes being built so air tight it’s more important than ever that our showers be built to manage vapor and not just water. Drywall just won’t hold up in a shower area, watch my failed shower videos to see some of what I’m talking about. If you already have drywall up Schluter does make a product (Kerdi Paper) that can be installed over drywall and still have a lifetime warranty.
