Smoke rising across Turkey-Syria border

(8 Sep 2016) Smoke could be seen rising on Thursday across the Syria-Turkey border, close to the Syrian city of Jarablus. The reason for possible blasts was not clear but controlled explosions of mines have been carried out by the Turkish military as part of their ongoing operation in northern Syria against the Islamic State group. Turkey launched its incursion into Syria in August, Operation Euphrates Shield, to back Syrian rebels in their fight to push IS out of the town of Jarablus. The operation also aimed at limiting Syrian Kurdish forces' advance west of the Euphrates River. Kurdish forces are also battling IS, and have seized a swath of territory along the border.
