Although it is difficult to determine the exact date of the Miraj event with certainty, most traditions tend to indicate that this great event occurred ten years after the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) mission and three years before the Hijrah. By that time, the message of Islam had reached not only the idolaters of Arabia, but also the Jews and Christians. This Surah provides undeniable proof of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) mission by referring to the extraordinary incident of Miraj. It then mentions the incident of the Children of Israel, how they faced humiliation, disgrace and destruction at the hands of their enemies for disobeying Allah twice. Thus, the Arab polytheists have been given a lesson to desist from opposing the Holy Quran, otherwise they too may face the same fate, because at this time the Holy Quran is the only book that is guiding towards the straight path with moderation. (Verse 9) Then, from verses 22 to 38, Muslims have been given very important instructions regarding their religious, social and moral conduct. And by condemning the unreasonable and hostile conduct of the polytheists, their objections have been answered, and Muslims have been instructed to worship Allah Almighty with trust in Him. Since two important events that happened to the Children of Israel have been mentioned at the beginning of the Surah, the Surah is called Surah Bani Israel. And its other name is Surah Al-Isra. Isra' is the name given to the journey of Ascension, and specifically to that part of the journey in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was taken from the Grand Mosque to Jerusalem.
