Free Flying for 8 Red Coins (Shifting Sand Land) - Super Mario 64 Complete Star Guide

In this episode of my Super Mario 64 Star Guide, we’re collecting “Free Flying for 8 Red Coins” in Shifting Sand Land. This star finally has us grabbing all of the red coins that have been floating around the level the entire time. To complete this star, you’ll need the Wing Cap, since several of the red coins are suspended high in the air and can’t realistically be reached any other way. I walk through which coins can be grabbed from the ground and which ones require flying, along with a practical strategy for collecting the airborne coins by taking off and landing multiple times. I also talk about how the Wing Cap functions more like a glider than true free flight, why it’s important to keep track of how long you’ve been airborne, and how flying over dangerous terrain can quickly end a run if the cap expires at the wrong moment. In addition to the obvious red coins, I point out a sneaky hidden red coin tucked behind the starting platform, which is easy to miss and can be risky due to the narrow footing and deadly sand nearby. Once all eight red coins are collected, the star spawns back near the Wing Cap platform, wrapping up this challenge.
