Pinaka MK-I EPRS Tested by Army & DRDO & ready for series production

Pinaka MK-I EPRS Tested As per the latest reports, the upgraded Pinaka Mk-I User (Enhanced) Rocket System (EPRS) surface-to-surface extended range flight-testing was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army at Pokhran Firing Range in Jaisalmer district on Wednesday & Thursday. Accuracy and consistency were achieved by the rockets, meeting all trial objectives satisfactorily. With these trials, the initial phase of technology absorption of EPRS by the industry has successfully been completed and the industry partners are ready for user trials/series production of the rocket system. In simple words, this was the trial of Pinaka MK-I rocket having EPRS warhead and produced by industry partners to whom DRDO has transferred the technology to manufacture them. At present there are two firms Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Economic Explosives Limited to whom DRDO has transferred the technology for Pinaka rockets. The DRDO, along with the army, conducted the trials of enhanced range Pinaka made by private sector with various warhead capabilities. So, these tests must be for the rockets made by EEL. In the month of April, the Pinaka Mk-I (Enhanced) Rocket System (EPRS) and Pinaka Area Denial Munition (ADM) rocket systems have been successfully flight-tested by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army at Pokhran Firing Ranges. A total of 24 EPRS rockets were fired for different ranges. The test was part of the initial phase of technology absorption of EPRS by the industry which was to be followed by user trail which we have witnessed in this week. The EPRS is the upgraded version of Pinaka variant which has been in service with the Indian Army for the last decade. The system has been upgraded with advanced technologies enhancing the range to meet the emerging requirements. Different versions of Pinaka DRDO has developed various versions of Pinaka MBRL. These are Pinaka Mk-I having range of 37.5 km which has been further extended to Enhanced Range Pinaka MK1 having range of 45kms. DRDO has also developed Pinaka Mk-II having a range of 60 km, Guided Pinaka having range of 75 km and 122 mm Extended Range rocket with a range of 40 km. The Pinaka rockets can achieve speed between Flight speed of 3.6-4 Mach. Maheshwarastra 1 & 2: High Mobility Long Range Precision Rocket Systems On 15th June, The Solar Industry has submitted proposals to manufacture two High Mobility Long Range Precision Rocket Systems, Maheshwarastra 1 and Maheshwarastra 2, under the Make II category of the Make in India initiative. Under the Make II initiative, the companies have to build prototypes without funding support from the government. Maheshwarastra 1 will be a Multi Barrel Guided Rocket Launch System with a range of 150 km while Maheshwarastra 2 will have a range of 250 km. Both of them are going to be guided rockets. The 250 km range rocket is going to be based on BrahMos missile without a seeker. The army version of BrahMos missile does not requires seeker as most of its target is going to be stationary one like bunkers, command centre, ammunition depot. The cost of BrahMos missile Rs 40 crore whereas the new 250 km rocket/missile proposed by Solar Industry is priced at just Rs 8 crore. But it can also be deployed with additional cost of ₹3 crore but still much cheaper than BrahMos. While BrahMos is the silver bullet of Indian Armed forces, however its higher cost will be unstainable in prolonged war. Brahmos carries warhead of 250 kg but Maheshwarastra-2 will carry warhead of 375 kg. Once this is developed it will become the indigenous HIMARS and even better in many aspects.
