This is a promo tape of Michael performing in Tokyo, leaked back in 2011. It’s pretty quiet overall, but still really interesting to hear. What makes it special is that either this show or the previous one in Los Angeles includes the very last performance of Dirty Diana. We can’t say for sure if he actually performed it this particular night, though. Unlike the separate clips I worked on before, this one actually has a more basic reconstruction in the mix. The bass was the hardest part to pick out, so sometimes it just kind of “disappears”. As I’ve mentioned in the other videos, I’ll repeat here too: there’s no real confirmation that The Way You Make Me Feel and Man in the Mirror are from this exact concert. I just decided to place them here because I needed somewhere to include those audios. So don’t take it as 100% certain that they belong to this show. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” – I like the way the synths sound in this version. Around 2:14, there seems to be a bass dropout, like something failed. At 2:30 the guitar really stands out nicely, and it happens again in a few other spots too. At 4:32 I enjoyed the way Michael sang the line “stop that child from crying.” At 4:47 there’s this cool little combo moment that I really liked. Overall, though, Michael’s voice sounds kind of “unwarmed” here, not weak, but not fully opened yet. “This Place Hotel” – The bass here is fantastic, really clean and strong. 4:55 hoo-o. At 8:04 Greg Phillinganes! But still, Michael’s voice keeps sounding sort of “unwarmed.” He’s not hoarse, but also not fully at 100%. “Another Part of Me” – Pretty much a standard performance “Human Nature” – This one feels like it’s being played a bit slower than usual. At 16:16, Michael clearly forgets the lyrics, gives a small smile about it, and even keeps messing up a little afterward. But honestly, the ending instrumental here is one of the best you’ll hear in the entire Bad Tour. It’s phenomenal. “Smooth Criminal” – I like the instrumental here, though it still feels kind of empty in places. At 25:40 the synths sound absolutely spectacular, though in the original mix they were set really low. “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” – Michael sounds genuinely happy here, so this could have been a really strong performance. Too bad there isn’t more of it available. “The Way You Make Me Feel” – Michael’s voice sounds really light and angelic here. At 34:53 especially, his tone feels almost heavenly. “Man in the Mirror” – For some reason, I really love this performance. The instruments blend in perfect harmony, and it just feels special. There are too many moments I enjoy to list them all, but a couple examples are at 37:54 and 38:06. This is definitely one worth listening to. Overall Grade: A- 0. Intro 00:00 1.
