The game is scheduled for release on January 31, 2023, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows. Following SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, it is the second SpongeBob game developed by Purple Lamp Studios and the 20th game in the SpongeBob SquarePants series. SpongeBob and Patrick receive a bottle of magical bubbles from the mysterious fortune teller Cassandra. They make too many wishes, and what seemed like harmless fun turns into a cosmic catastrophe: The fabric of reality dissolves, and magical wish worlds open up everywhere. Since many of SpongeBob's friends are sucked into these strange worlds, they must slip into various cosmic costumes to travel to the wish worlds and rescue SpongeBob's friends. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake was first announced on September 17, 2021, as part of THQ Nordic's 10th anniversary livestream. The first announcement trailer followed the same day. The game is set to feature seven distinct worlds and more than 30 "cosmic skins" from the series for players to wear. A playable demo of the game was presented at Gamescom 2022. Conceived as a potential sequel to Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, the project was greenlit following that game's commercial success. While Battle for Bikini Bottom featured SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy as playable characters, each with one or more special abilities, Purple Lamp Studios opted to have only one playable character this time, who has multiple special abilities in The Cosmic Shake. Unlockable costumes also became a central theme of the game. Playtime is expected to be around 8 hours for the story alone and up to 12 hours for all content.
