Formula1 1983 Austria GP | Prost vs Arnoux vs Piquet at the Österreichring

The 1983 Austrian Grand Prix was one of the most dramatic and strategically brilliant races of the entire Formula 1 season — a battle between the era's biggest names, where Alain Prost delivered a late-race masterclass to claim victory and tighten his grip on the Drivers' Championship. 📌 Visit our Racing & Beyond Blog for more stories: https://racingbeyond.com/ Held on August 14, 1983, at the legendary Österreichring in Spielberg, Styria, the race was a showcase of turbo-era power, raw speed, and racecraft at its finest. Patrick Tambay put his Ferrari on pole position in the dying moments of qualifying, snatching it from teammate René Arnoux with a stunning lap of 1:29.871 — setting the stage for a tense 53-lap showdown. At the lights, Tambay leapt into the lead from Arnoux, with Nelson Piquet, Alain Prost, and a young Nigel Mansell in fierce pursuit. The race unfolded at breathtaking pace, but drama struck on lap 30 when Tambay's Ferrari succumbed to total oil pressure failure, ending a commanding lead. Patrese's Brabham-BMW blew its engine in the same dramatic sequence, completely reshaping the front of the field and reigniting the Drivers' Championship battle. After the pit stop cycle played out, it was Arnoux who surged ahead — closely followed by the calculating Alain Prost. The rivalry between the two Frenchmen was fierce, personal, and electric. Prost stalked Arnoux with ice-cold patience, and on lap 48 — just five laps from the flag — he pounced, took the lead with ease at the Österreichring, and immediately pulled away from the crippled Ferrari, which had lost fourth gear. Nelson Piquet held on for a vital third place in his Brabham-BMW, fending off relentless pressure from Eddie Cheever's Renault in the closing laps. Mansell took a strong 5th in his Lotus-Renault, while Niki Lauda claimed the final championship point in 6th, driving with all his trademark precision in front of his home crowd. The result gave Alain Prost his fourth victory of the 1983 Formula 1 season, extending his Drivers' Championship lead to 14 points with only four races remaining. In a cruel twist of fate, Prost would ultimately lose the title to Nelson Piquet by just two points — one of motorsport's most heartbreaking endings. Adding to the bittersweet legacy, the 1983 Austrian Grand Prix proved to be the final victory ever scored by the original factory Renault team in Formula 1.
