One Sabbath, Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and they were watching him closely. There before him was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus, addressing the scribes and Pharisees, asked, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" They remained silent. Then Jesus touched the sick man with his hand, cured him, and told him to leave. Turning to them, he asked, "If any of you has a donkey or an ox fall into a well, will you not immediately pull it out, even on the Sabbath?" And they did not know what to answer him.
