Jessika's vintage knits and medicine meets knitting, Episode 11

Meet Jessika from Sweden as she shares her vintage knitting and some history of her country. You'll learn a few key Swedish knitting-related words along the way. We'll also look at an interesting medical application of knitting as the intersection of science and art hits the news. #medicalknits #scienceandart #stockholm Places mentioned: Historiska museet (The Historical Museum) Livrustkammaren ( the Royal Armoury) Interesting facts about the knitting traditions on Gotland. The first mention of knitters is in the minutes of the Council from 1682: Paul and Engel Slesijn, Stocking makers. In 1695 a merchant brought 150 pairs of wool stockings to Stockholm, according to the journals of Visby Stora Sjötull (grand customs). The cave on one of the small islands of the West Gotland archipelago Stora Karlsö, is called Stora Förvar and is believed to have been populated for about 10000 years. Sheep is får in Swedish, but lamb in Gutnic/Gotlandic. Lamb is lamm in Swedish and lambunge/lambunggar (plural) in Gutnic/Gotlandic. The Gotlandic sheep, Gutefår is also known as Hånnlamb in Gutnic/Gotlandic (horned sheep). Both the ram and the ewe have horns. This ewe is living in the parish of Sundre, one of the 92 parishes on Gotland (it was a wealthy island during both the Viking age and the Middle Ages). Your host, Billie ("billietoy"), uses costume jewelry, hats, handbags, gloves and scarves to style each sweater. Some episodes include guest knitters from around the world who will showcase their personal collections. You'll meet new knitters with a passion for vintage 1940s style, while others will be retirees who have been knitting for decades. Each will share selections from their portfolio of retro garments, from cardigan sweaters to jumpers / pullovers to coats and jackets. You're likely to see patterns or yarns that will inspire you, particularly if you love vintage fashion. Besides taking you through knitting projects, we'll have some laughs and go on some adventures together.
