If ‘Big Rock’ was a riff 🤘🎸 Even though he was a virtuoso, it was always about the music first and foremost. Crafting punchy riffs & soulful tunes was more important than blazing for the sake of it. It’s a very fine line, one which many of EVH’s imitators failed to understand. Shredding without music is like icing without cake. Many of Ed’s riffs are not overly complex or athletic, but they achieve their goal at a 10/10. Riffs like Runnin’ with the Devil, Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, You Really Got Me and of course Unchained are examples of riffs that just rock so hard, without needing to be technically complex. That said, to play them authentically is far more difficult than it may seem. There’s a swagger & intensity to Edward’s feel that is probably impossible to truly replicate. But it’s fun to try.
