Simeon and Anna, followers of God, are also in the temple and rejoice at finally seeing the long-awaited Messiah. Scripture: Luke 1 Wonder Truth: God's Plan is Perfect ------ Foundation Building Blocks Who: The Gospel of Luke was penned by one of the most skilled Greek writers in the New Testament. While it does not name its author, many early Christians believed that it was written by Luke the physician, a traveling companion of Paul (Colossians 4:14). What: Luke 2 tells the story of how Jesus’ birth was followed by signs confirming that He really was God’s promised Savior and that God was carrying out His plan. It also shows how, over time, God kept His promises to people like Simeon and Anna. Where: The setting of this story is the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was always bustling because people came not only to make sacrifices and to worship God but also to meet with people and even conduct commerce. When: This story takes place shortly after Jesus’ birth between 6 and 4 BC. Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to consecrate Him to God according to Jewish law and custom. Connecting to God’s Big Story: Israel was waiting for a Messiah, and yet hardly anyone recognized Him when He came. Still, the Holy Spirit spoke to faithful Simeon and Anna, announcing that God had kept His promise and the Messiah was here!
