Following SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, it is the second SpongeBob game developed by Purple Lamp Studios and the 20th installment in the SpongeBob SquarePants series. SpongeBob and Patrick receive a bottle of magic bubbles as a gift from the mysterious fortune teller Cassandra. They bubble up too many wishes, and what seemed like harmless fun turns into a cosmic catastrophe: The fabric of reality unravels, and magical wish worlds open up everywhere. With many of SpongeBob's friends sucked into these strange realms, they must don various cosmic costumes to travel to the wish worlds and rescue SpongeBob's friends. SpongeBob and Patrick receive a bottle of magic bubbles as a gift from the mysterious fortune teller Cassandra. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake was first announced on September 17, 2021, as part of THQ Nordic's 10th Anniversary livestream. The first announcement trailer followed the same day. The game is said to include seven different worlds and more than 30 "cosmic skins" from the series for the player to wear. A playable demo of the game was presented at Gamescom 2022. Conceived as a potential sequel to Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated, the project was greenlit after the game's commercial success. While Battle for Bikini Bottom featured SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy as playable characters, each with one or more special abilities, Purple Lamp Studios opted for a single playable character this time around, who will have multiple special abilities in The Cosmic Shake. Unlockable costumes also became a central theme of the game. The playtime is estimated at around 8 hours for the story alone and up to 12 hours for all content.
