"By picking a winner, we created a war." So says James Fennell in a 2018 interview with Larken Rose, discussing the chaos he witnessed in post-Gaddafi Libya. James and Susanne (at the time of Bitnation Pangea) were discussing their respective experiences while contracted by US and UK intelligence to assess the situation in the wake of the Libyan government's collapse. It was their observation that peace and order were quickly restored in the villages, towns, and communities that were allowed to revert to an expression of self-governance that had likely existed for millennia. However, the respective intelligence agencies had other ideas, and Susanne and James were directed to "choose a winner," triggering civil war. As Susanne succinctly observes: " it's this middle management layer that is killing people." Larken observes that people tend to worry what the world would look like if people were called upon to manage their own affairs, and says "it's what you are doing right now, in your own life." At the time I (Kent Dahlgren) was serving as Bitnation's CTO, and I note how the removal of these unnecessary and expensive middle and upper management layers, we could unlock opportunity cost necessary to fund the revival of our local communities. "You know what constitutes an unknown unknown? Our current state of affairs, which has directly contributed to a state of chaos we are experiencing today." Naturally, this kind of thinking runs counter to those accustomed to functioning without transparency in the service of other masters, and with complete impunity: the rogue elements within our own intelligence community.
