Finding strange things on eBay seems to be my new thing to do, I guess. Maybe some day I'll run across physical copies of Hacx and Perdition's Gate. But this isn't about Doom, this is about Serious Sam, more specifically the Karnak Demo level that was released for free on the Internet. This is such a strange find for me, I was going through eBay for the Special Edition / Limited Edition version of Serious Sam: The First Encounter, but at the time I couldn't find a copy of it. Instead, I came across this Max Payne (2001) pre-order demo disc being sold for $20, and I was curious on what this disc has. I wasn't aware of the Serious Site upload of this disc when I made the purchase, so I just thought I should make an overview of what this disc is and upload it for others to see. $20 down the drain for what is basically The First Encounter's demo. Sure there's the supposed bonus levels and the full version of Serious Warped Deathmatch v2.01 included, but they require the full game to play them. Basically, those 10 bonus levels the disc claims to have don't actually work. Interestingly, a demo version of Seriously Warped Deathmatch v2.01 is included with the demo installation of The First Encounter. It gives you a bit of a taste of what the full version of the mod is like, not sure how many people were playing it at the time though. The 5 demo levels the demo disc claims to have are all from the Serious Warped Deathmatch v2.01 demo from what I can assume. At the very least, the disc isn't exactly making false claims, however you think there would be more single-player content involved. Instead, 9 of the included bonus levels are for deathmatch, only 1 of them is made for single-player/co-op. As I already said, you can't really play any of these bonus levels, all you can play is the Karnak Demo level and Desert Temple, the latter being the final game's only deathmatch level. I can't say much on the Seriously Warped Deathmatch mod here since GameSpy has its servers shut down for a long time now and even then, I don't think many people were playing online with this mod, especially with The Second Encounter releasing a year after The First Encounter. Retail copies of The Second Encounter also includes a more up to date Seriously Warped Deathmatch, so playing the mod in The First Encounter basically became somewhat obsolete I imagine. That and I am not sure how many people in the US played this mod online given that Serious Sam's fanbase are mainly from Europe and Russia. Overall, this was an interesting piece of history, one that is basically obscure for most Serious Sam fans. I am not sure how many people pre-ordered May Payne 1 for PC but given how little results there are about this online, I'm going to guess not many. How many more versions of Serious Sam: The First Encounter have been distributed and sold? I do not know, what I do know is that there's still the other Special Edition / Limited Edition to pick up. Anyhow, download and what you want with my copy of the demo disc I uploaded. The date the demo disc was packaged is the name of the ISO file, the date being June 13, 2001.
