Stoltenberg calls for political resolution in Syria

(23 Oct 2019) NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Syria and is urging Turkey to focus on the threat posed by the Islamic State extremist group. Stoltenberg said Wednesday that "I think what we have seen on the last days is encouraging, because it shows that it is possible to move towards a political settlement, a political solution." Russia and Turkey agreed Tuesday to deploy their forces across nearly the entire northeastern Syria border, filling the void left by President Donald Trump's abrupt withdrawal of US forces. Stoltenberg says "it is a bit too early to judge the consequences" of that agreement. NATO defence ministers will discuss Turkey's invasion of northern Syria during talks in Brussels on Thursday.
