Supreme Court affirmative action ruling; How it affects you
READ MORE: https://midmichigannow.com/news/local... Lawmakers and legal experts are reacting to the supreme court's decision Thursday to end affirmative action in universities. David Luke, a Chief Diversity officer at the University of Michigan Flint says this decision won't really impact colleges in Michigan but will impact many around the nation. "Affirmative action is a way to more specifically focus on how can we can bring in more students of color, who were historically excluded and for whom these institutions weren't designed," says Luke. In 2006, affirmative action was banned statewide in Michigan. Luke says, "for most of the country this means that any university that in any way considered race in admissions, basically can't." In a statement sent to Mid-Michigan Now by the Conservative Political Action Coalition (CAPC) they say this decision was a step in the right direction. Racial bias of all types must be eliminated from all institutions in our society, whether they go by the name of affirmative action or fall under the newest Leftist moniker of ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ (DEI). Luke says although some may think this was the right ruling, research shows that without affirmative action, the admissions process at many colleges and universities around the nation will become less diverse. "This is still people making decisions about different metrics and instruments that are biased. We know standardized tests, there are problems with that and admissions personnel themselves bring their own bias conscious and unconscious into admissions decisions."
