Beijing welcomes formal ties with Honduras, Taipei expresses ‘grave concern’

The move would end Honduras’ ties with Taiwan, as Beijing does not maintain diplomatic ties with countries that recognise the self-ruled island. The Honduran government said the decision was made partly because of the country’s financial challenges and debt. If the Central American country breaks off relations, Taiwan would be recognised by just 13 governments.
