Mr Andrews signed Victoria onto China’s Belt and Road economic initiative during his time as premier. The grand show of military might, featuring over 10,000 troops and hundreds of ground equipment in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, marks the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. Millions of Chinese people were killed during a prolonged war with imperial Japan in the 1930s and 40s, which became part of a global conflict following Tokyo’s attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. In historic scenes, Chinese President Xi Jinping was pictured walking down a red carpet alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin towards Tiananmen Square ahead of the 70 minute parade. It’s the first time the trio have appeared together at the same event.
