75 kW Vortex Turbines to Maximize Agricultural Energy Resilience!

In KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, commercial farming operations face growing operational challenges due to rising grid tariffs and localized power outages. To secure reliable, uninterrupted energy for critical irrigation infrastructure, a private farm partnered with Turbulent to deploy a site-tailored clean energy solution. Leveraging the low-head flow of the Mzimkhulu River, Turbulent designed and installed a 75 kW micro-hydro system comprising three vortex units (2x 30 kW and 1x 15 kW integrated with solar power in a dual on-grid and off-grid hybrid configuration. The installation delivers continuous, autonomous power to run irrigation pumps, pivot systems, and daily farm facilities. This project demonstrates how decentralized hydro-solar solutions can secure food production and optimize water resource potential. Delivered with the support of the Government of Flanders through the FICAP framework, in partnership with Irritech.
