#Shark #Jaws #Sharks Since Steven Spielberg's blockbuster hit was released in June 1975, there have been minor waves of shark exploitation films. After a string of Jaws imitators in the 1980s and 1990s, including Universal's terrible third and fourth Jaws sequels, the success of Deep Blue Sea (1999) kick-started a new wave of shark-themed movies. The success of The Asylum's Mega Shark films led to increasingly silly and outlandish productions that peaked with the ever-mocking Sharknado franchise. Low-budget producers took the bait, and a series of even sillier shark movie mutations flooded our screens. Occasionally, there were also effective serious films like *Bait 3D*, *The Shallows*, and *47 Meters Down*, reminding us that sharks can still be scary. Meanwhile, the parodies continued, and Deep Blue Sea spawned a couple of late-entry sequels. Megabucks' long-gestating adaptation of The Meg finally arrived in 2018, which then prompted a mockumentary of *The Asylum*. Recent years have also seen a number of Chinese shark films, often featuring an ironic ecological theme given the country's poor pollution record.
