The Department of Drama and Dance presents “The Cherry Orchard”

The Department of Drama and Dance presents Chekhov’s play The Cherry Orchard, adapted for American audiences by Tom Stoppard and directed by Hofstra Professor Emeritus of Drama Peter Sander. Performances take place at the Schaeffer Black Box Theater November 4-13, 2016. The Cherry Orchard follows the arrival of the Ranevsky family to their estate and their ultimate departure – along with the world of privilege in which they lived. Presented by the Moscow Art Theater at the end of 1903, The Cherry Orchard was Chekhov’s last play before he died the following year of tuberculosis. According to Professor Sander, “Many consider this play to be his masterpiece: both for Chekhov’s acute diagnosis of the state of the Russian upper classes and his perceptive prognosis for their future.”
