https://www.alpacaexpeditions.com/soc... Every year in the rainy season Alpaca Expeditions organizes reforestation day in the Andes mountain of Cusco region. Today, thanks to the participation of our guides and the administrative team of the company, more than 2000 native plants were planted in the community of Matinga located at the entrance to the sacred valley, Alpaca Expeditions has been carrying out reforestation campaigns during the rainy season for the past 7 years. It is very important to reforest the mountains with native trees, we chose the queuñal tree (Polylepis Incanca). This native plant since ancient times has been the key to protect the headwaters of watersheds, the habitat needed by the biodiversity of the Andean forests and wetlands. The queñual is one of the most cold-resistant trees in the world; there are species within its family that grow above 5,200 meters above sea level. The importance of the queñual is not only measured in the ability to grow in icy places but in the ecological functions it fulfills: it regulates the climate, prevents erosion, contributes with nutrients to the improvement of soils, stores large amounts of water, feeds springs and Puquios (underground water wells) We share with you this experience.
