How to PAINT OWLS - 10 Watercolour Owl Top Tips
Here are 10 TOP TIPS for painting watercolour owls from professional realistic artist Paul Hopkinson. Owls are quite often a favourite bird for artists to paint, their huge shiny eyes just calling out to be painted. Capturing them in watercolour requires a slightly different approach compared to a small bird. They have specific features that need to be tackled in a certain way and I also find setting them within a scene works well too. In this video I break things down into 10 top tips. Choose your background colours carefully. 01:22 2. The eyes are a stand-out feature, spend time painting them. 02:34 3. The second obvious feature is the beak so again take you time with this. 03:31 4. You need to paint the feathers, so they look soft, fluffy and deep. 04:33 5. Unlike smaller birds, owls have facial eye discs. Find out how to paint them next. 06:09 6. Vary the colours within the layers as you paint the feathers, this looks more realistic. 08:14 7. Define individual feathers as you apply the later layers of paint. 09:39 8. Owls feet are quite different to those of a small bird so need an alternative approach. 10:50 9.
