Historical beer in the 18th/ 19th century

Between 1700 and 1900 beer as an industry and commercial product boomed. It spread across the world and was available in huge amounts. While the popularity of beer has stagnated it remains a significant commercial interest from this time. The 18th and 19th centuries are well known for wars, pestilence and famine. Colonisation of the world. Advances in engineering and science. Less well known is that this same period was the golden age of beer. Beer saw a resurgence in popularity as supplies of competing alcoholic beverages plummeted. This was down to a range of factors. Everything from economical to political, industrial to microbial and mother nature’s interference. Industrialisation is one of the big factors. Water was always a limiting feature of many breweries or places where breweries could be built. You needed ready access to the basic staples of beer; water, malt and yeast. By the 18th and 19th centuries large industrialisation and facilities mitigated these problems. Pumping stations brought stable, potable water in large quantities. The advent of trains further supplied these breweries with not just malt and grain but allowed the brewery to send their beer far afield. In some cases beer was shipped not just by train but ship. This could go across an entire continent and even on intercontinental voyages. Travelling so far with beer while a great idea required the development of new beer styles and processes to survive the voyage. This is seen today in thew Indian Pale Ale enjoyed by many. We also continue to see beer bottles that have been pasteurised. Industrialisation, food safety and international trade was not the only issue. Beer became so intrinsic to life that it also led to tension. Different municipalities and sates had to either decrease taxes on beer or face resistance.
