Official data shows the birth rate dropped to its lowest level since 1949, while the death rate climbed to its highest point in decades, leading to a population decline of over three million people in a single year. Despite ending the one-child policy, allowing up to three children per couple, and offering financial incentives such as child allowances and extended maternity benefits, births have continued to fall. High living costs, changing lifestyle preferences, delayed marriages, and concerns over childcare and education expenses are discouraging young Chinese from starting families. Experts, including those at the United Nations, warn that China’s population will continue to shrink sharply through the century, with serious consequences for its workforce, economic growth, and pension system.
