'Shame! Shame!' MPs react furiously, chaos in Commons as scandal MP Paterson's suspension stopped

MP's erupted into chants of "shame" as it was announced scandal Tory MP Owen Paterson will not be suspended from the Commons for his involvement in a 'cash for access' scandal. Mr Paterson, the Tory MP for North Shropshire, was found to have committed an 'egregious' breach of standards rules as he lobbied for two companies paying him more than £100,000 per year. Chaos erupted in Parliament today (3rd November 2021) as MP's voted to rip up standards rules to block the suspension of Owen Paterson who was found to have used his job to lobby for two private companies he was linked to. MP's screamed in anger at the decision after it was revealed Prime Minister Boris Johnson intervened to bring an end to the saga. One MP could be heard shouting "what has this place come to". While another could be heard saying "shameful" as speaker Lindsay Hoyle announced the results of the vote. The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Kathryn Stone conducted an investigation and the Committee on Standards then recommended Mr Paterson be banned from the Commons for 30 sitting days. A vote on that recommendation was due to take place this afternoon but allies of Mr Paterson brought forward an amendment to block the suspension and see his case reviewed. The amendment was backed by 250 votes to 232, a majority of 18, after Boris Johnson ordered Tory MPs to vote for it in a stunning intervention in Parliamentary procedure. #OwenPatterson #HouseOfCommons #BorisJohnson
