How to say Goodbye Winter - Snow drift with Subaru Impreza WRX

Goodbye old man Winter. Hello Spring. But first ... one last snow drift. a drift is a controlled oversteer this means that you in theory are able to hold on to the slide forever. with front wheel drive this is near impossible. what you can do is a powerslide. get some speed and start turning. maintain grip during that turn, pull the handbrake in a sharp fashion to get the tail to come out. as soon as the tail lets go, let off the hand brake, keep accelerating and try to regain control of the rear wheels (countersteer) as soon as you feel the rear wheels grip, reapply hand brake while turning in the direction of the slide to keep sliding. by activating the handbrake quickly an repeatedly you induce an oversteering motion. left alone, you will spin out. (sin completely around until you stop) by adding in countersteering, you can balance it out. now when you countersteer, you actively work against the oversteer which is why you need to reapply the handbrake to keep the rear wheels sliding. in snow you have a much easier time because you can practice much easier. try to do donuts and increase their size by controlling how often you apply hand brake and how much you countersteer. once you can easily control the size of the circle try to change directions and do a figure 8 pattern. when you can control the size of a figure 8 you are doing great front wheel drive drifting. if you don have snow you can always try tray drifting. get some fast food restaurant plastic trays and place them beneath the rear wheels and locking the handbrake on. you wont be able to hold onto a drift as long because you don't have use of the handbrake.
