Palestinian police post STORYLINE Hundreds of Palestinian police trained in Jenin on Wednesday ahead of the projected Israeli troop withdrawal from the northern West Bank. The Israelis have approved the arrival of Palestinian security forces who are there to assist the local forces in restoring order to this turbulent West Bank town. The men were initially trained to take control of four West Bank settlements that Israel already vacated. But Israel then decided not to hand over those areas to Palestinian security control, so the forces will instead reinforce Palestinian security forces in Jenin to help them impose law and order, according to the commander of the National Security Forces in the West Bank. Israeli officials had said that, despite the withdrawal from four settlements in the area last month, the Israeli army would maintain control in the area to prevent attacks on Israelis in the remaining two settlements and to deal with any security threats. The forces will ensure that the Palestinian Authority is the only armed force in Jenin, and will deal with the problem of militant fugitives in the West Bank town, according to Palestinian security sources. Armed groups operate in Jenin with virtual impunity, occasionally clashing with Palestinian security forces.
