Volunteers scour Amsterdam's canals on Cleanup Day

So, like I said, as we are using the canals, we believe that it is one of our most important tasks to also clean up the canals and to make usure the planet stays as good as possible." 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Wenhui (only first name given), Chinese tourist: "I think, there are a lot of trash, things, plastics in the canal and it is very, very important for us to notice and to pick it up, or better if we don't throw it into the canal." 10. Various of tourists on the boats STORYLINE: Volunteers used pedal and open boats on Saturday to clean up the historical canals of Amsterdam during World Cleanup Day 2023. A clean-up campaign organised by a touring company, spread volunteers through the canals to pick up trash floating in the water. Stromma Netherlands CEO, Carola Hoekstra said to have a better planet and clean environment, everyone must play their part in keeping the world clean. Amsterdam has 165 canals, with a combined length of 100 kilometers. Keeping them clean is a tough task for the city. According to Waternet , the company responsible for the cleaning of Amsterdam canals, 50.000 kilograms of plastic garbage and around 11.000 bicycles are pulled out of canals every year. The Amsterdam canals are listed on the UNESCO heritage list.
