Sri Lanka, one of the co-hosts of the marquee event alongside India, will welcome Pakistan for a three-match T20I series. All three matches will be played at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla, with the opening game scheduled for Wednesday (January 7). Dasun Shanaka will lead the hosts, who have named a strong 18-man squad for the series. Sri Lanka have undergone a change in leadership following a disappointing Asia Cup campaign. Charith Asalanka has been relieved of the captaincy but remains part of the squad. Asalanka was the designated captain during the tri-series in Pakistan but returned home midway due to health concerns. Soon after, he was removed from the captaincy as the board looked to ease the burden on him. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis are the likely openers for the hosts, with young Kamil Mishara having impressed at the top of the order. Kusal Perera provides the firepower, while the experience of Charith Asalanka, Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva lends solidity to the middle order. Dasun Shanaka, Dunith Wellalage, Janith Liyanage, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushan Hemantha form a strong group of all-rounders. Maheesh Theekshana is the frontline spinner and will be supported by Hasaranga, Wellalage and de Silva in the spin department. Eshan Malinga, Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera combine to make a formidable seam attack. Sri Lanka might hand a debut to the mystery spinner Traveen Mathew who impressed in the recent Rising Stars Asia Cup. For Pakistan, several big names are missing from the series. While some have fallen out of favour, others have been granted permission to continue their stints in franchise cricket. Mohammad Rizwan is not part of the touring party and will continue representing the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League. Babar Azam, who featured in the recent tri-series at home, has also been left out and is currently turning out for the Sydney Sixers. Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf have also been allowed to feature in the BBL. Shaheen is sidelined with injury, while Rauf will continue with the Melbourne Stars. Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah and Usman Tariq arrive fresh from a successful ILT20 campaign with the Desert Vipers. Mohammad Nawaz, Saim Ayub and Sahibzada Farhan have left the Bangladesh Premier League midway to link up with the national squad. Shadab Khan makes his return to the national side, having last featured in T20Is in June last year. He has flown in from Australia and is set to join the Sydney Thunder once the series concludes. Salman Ali Agha will lead a side that boasts a healthy blend of youth and experience. Khawaja Nafay is the only uncapped player in the visitors’ squad.
