Focus on Somalia: A CUT TOO MANY - FIGHTING FGM IN SOMALIA EP. 27

Female Genital Mutilation is highly prevalent in Somalia, practiced among 95% of the girls aged between 4 and 11 years. It's a traditional practice that's considered an honor in the Somali culture and the women that do not undergo FGM are highly stigmatised, considered unclean and not worthy of marriage. This is what a recent study by the UNICEF identified as the major factors responsible for the wide spread practice not only in Somalia but affecting Somali as far as in the United Kingdom. Dego Waqaf; the Chief Executive Officer of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation asserts that it's the elderly women keeping the FGM practice alive.
