France-Germany: Why the tension? - The ideas that govern the world

France-Germany: a couple, a tandem, a relationship at the heart of Europe, a foundational link and the enduring power of political Europe. This was essential after three horrific conflicts: 1870/1871, 1914/1918, 1939/1945, which pitted these two nations against each other and which would come together to build a Europe of peace, cooperation, and prosperity. Contrary to the myths of an almost natural and harmonious alliance between our two countries, there have always been ups and downs, a mutual political rivalry based on cyclical and structural frictions regarding the economy, institutions, and strategy towards the United States, Russia, China, NATO, etc. Why be surprised, since, as the philosopher Pierre Manent stated, "our nations differ in their political history." This historical distinction has not prevented Europe from becoming an integrated community of peoples and nations, a commercial and even military power, a territorial and political union envied by Africa, the Americas, and Asia. At the dawn of this third millennium, marked by economic and financial crises and armed conflicts, notably the war in Ukraine, and not forgetting the Covid-19 pandemic, the European and community spirit is weakened, and we are witnessing a waning of the Franco-German relationship. Why, and in what areas? Émile Malet welcomes: Dr. Hans-Dieter Lucas: Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to France Pierre Lellouche: Former Minister, International Expert Edouard Guillaud: Admiral, Former Chief of the Defence Staff (CEMA) Maurice Gourdault-Montagne: Ambassador, Former Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Presented by Émile Malet The news reveals a world in turmoil, fracturing, attracting, and confronting each other every day. Far from the constant barrage of these images, Émile Malet invites us to look at the news differently... with the help of diverse minds, free from ideological constraints, to better understand the ideas that govern the world.
