American Bandstand – May 13, 1967 – PART 2 FULL EPISODE – The Merry-Go-Round and Jerry Butler

Welcome back to May,1967. If you’ve been following along in real time (and shame on you if you haven’t) here is the episode that followed the one I posted on Wednesday. Maybe we will see it in color soon (hint, hint, lol) As the kids are sitting in stadium-style seats (vs. the bleachers) in both the May 6th and 13th episodes, they most likely taped both episodes on the same day. The stadium seats also mean the show was kicked out of its usual “Prospect Studios” location today (not sure why) and was taped at the “ABC Vine Street Theater”. In the 60’s, the dancers would arrive on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and tape 3 or 4 episodes in a row. Between takes the girls would go to the restroom and change dresses and the boys would go to the restroom or out to their cars and change ties, sweaters and jackets. This was done so it would appear that the episodes were taped on different weeks. (It was just a mirage) The dancers were never paid a dime but, on occasion, the show bought them KFC between episodes. They also got free certs – one of the shows sponsors (I’ve heard it’s two…two…two mints in one) Throughout Bandstand’s 35+ year run, the dancers never auditioned for the show. They were all just regular local teens who wanted to dance on TV – although the “regulars” like Don, Frank, Peggy and Famous (and their +1) got first crack at tickets. Since I started posting Bandstand clips almost 4 years ago, several of the 60’s dancers or their family members have stopped by to comment. Robin Morris, who can be seen dancing to “Somebody To Love” on the riser, never commented, but Don told me she had seen and enjoyed watching these clips and episodes. Sadly, Robin passed away in January 2020 (RIP). Rudy Mikaelian, one of the judges in the Rate-A-Record today, commented a few times here. Rudy passed away a couple of years ago.(RIP) Rudy and his brother Art, who frequently danced with Robin Miller in the late 60’s and early 70’s, can be seen doing the “spin” at the end of the TOP 10 “Sugar, Sugar” clip. On the Billboard Hot 100 today: 1) The Happening – The Supremes 2) Sweet Soul Music – Arthur Conley 3) Somethin’ Stupid – Nancy and Frank Sinatra 4) Groovin’ – The Young Rascals 5) A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You – The Monkees 7) You Got What It Takes – The Dave Clark Five 30) Shake A Tail Feather – James and Bobby Purify 31) Somebody To Love – Jefferson Airplane 34) I Was Kaiser Bill’s Batman – Whistling Jack Smith 41) Happy Jack – The Who 45) Buy Me For The Rain – The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Back here in May ’21- The end of COVID is near (Thank God). Thank you for getting vaccinated and thank you for watching!
