Today, electric power windows are predominantly installed in almost all vehicle classes. Typically, there is an individual switch in each door panel. Another set of switches is located in the driver's door, allowing the driver to operate all windows. In some car models, the central set of switches is located in the center console, where it is also accessible to the passenger. In cable-operated power windows, an electric motor drives a cable drum via a worm/spur gear transmission. The two ends of a steel cable are attached to this mechanism in such a way that, when the mechanism is rotated, one end winds up and the other unwinds. The cable pulls the window fixings, which run on two guide rails, via a Bowden cable and pulleys; the end of the cable without tension is wound back onto the cable drum. The ends of the two Bowden cable sheaths are spring-loaded to the drive housing to provide a degree of flexibility in the system. However, other systems are also in use. Simple systems implement anti-pinch protection partially mechanically via slip or friction clutches. For more complex or more convenient window regulators with an automatic closing function ("comfort closing," etc.), it is essential that anti-pinch protection is present: As soon as the drive torque for closing the window exceeds a certain threshold, depending on the window position, the direction of movement of the glass must be reversed to release the potential obstruction. The anti-pinch protection system must determine, based on the window's position, whether an obstruction is present or whether the window has reached the rubber seal at its end position. The anti-pinch function is usually implemented by electronics mounted directly on the motor, as the window position on the motor shaft can be easily measured using Hall sensors.
