Back on My August 1st Tradition – Year 6 and Going Strong! Every year on August 1st, I challenge myself to remix a theme that holds deep personal meaning to me as a fan, a musician, and a producer. This year marks the 6th anniversary of that tradition, and for 2025, I decided to finally take on one of the most iconic and emotionally charged themes in the entire Pokémon franchise: Champion Cynthia’s original battle theme. I didn’t go for her “Masters” version this remix is based on her original Sinnoh Champion theme, the one that left a lasting impression on me the very first time I battled her in Pokémon Platinum on my old Nintendo DS. That moment felt huge the music, the tension, the fact that you’re battling the most enigmatic Champion the series had introduced up to that point. I wanted to capture all of that: the atmosphere, the stakes, and the darkness of Sinnoh’s narrative arc. Musical Overhaul: Fast, Intense, and Cinematic One of the first changes I made was cranking the tempo up to 200 BPM, which is blisteringly fast perfect for creating a sense of adrenaline and urgency. It sets the tone right away: this isn’t just a battle, it’s a final showdown. I also shifted the time signature to 6/8, giving the rhythm a lilting, sweeping momentum almost like a waltz caught in hyperdrive. That change added a sense of dramatic motion that fits Cynthia’s elusive and elegant persona. Then came the key change: I transposed the theme to E major, a key that brings a bright, triumphant, but still emotionally complex tone. In musical terms, the E major scale consists of the notes: E – F# – G# – A – B – C# – D# – (E) Its corresponding key signature contains four sharps: F#, C#, G#, and D#. E major isn’t just bold it’s confident, clear, and regal. That helped enhance the gravity of the theme while giving me room to experiment with tonal contrast. Style & Sound Design: Returning to My Poke&Remix Roots Sonically, I made the conscious decision to return to the traditional Drum & Bass style that originally defined my early remix work under the Poke&Remix label. I haven’t used this style in full force since my remix of the Pokémon GO Gym Leader theme, which was actually a stem remix/edit of my older 2018 version so that one carried a more dated sound by comparison. This new Cynthia remix is fully reimagined from the ground up, merging modern production with a classic formula that still resonates. The drum programming is tight and fast-paced, supporting the aggressive tempo while allowing the melodic and harmonic content to breathe. The basslines are deep and driving, and the percussion is crisp and kinetic all designed to keep the listener on edge, as if they’re in the middle of a high-stakes match. Layered over that is a dark, expressive piano motif that runs throughout the track. The piano, to me, represents the soul of this remix it’s what makes this battle feel emotional, important, and personal. This track isn’t just a remix; it’s a tribute to the feeling of being a young Trainer facing Cynthia for the first time in Pokémon Platinum, with its deeper, more mature storyline compared to Diamond and Pearl. That tone influenced the darker atmosphere of the remix. I wanted it to feel like more than just another battle—it’s a culmination, a climax, a rite of passage. What’s Next? A New Era Begins with Pokémon Black & White Looking ahead, I’m already deep into the next project: a remix of the Pokémon Black & White Rival theme. This one’s going in a completely different direction: Future Bass meets Dance, Tech, and Bass House. It’s an ambitious fusion that reflects the evolving energy and character arcs of the Unova region expect colorful synths, gritty bass textures, and emotional highs. As always, thanks to everyone who’s been following me on this annual journey. Whether you’ve been here since year one or this is your first time hearing my work, I hope this remix captures that same rush you felt facing Cynthia under the flickering light of your DS screen.
