Factors that promote national unity There are factors that can help people to see themselves as one nation, despite their differences. 1. The Constitution A constitution is a set of rules agreed upon by a group or groups of people who have chosen to live together as a community governed by that common set of rules. 2. One government The government of Kenya has three arms, namely the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. The three arms run the affairs of this nation at various levels. 3. Presidency Kenya, despite having several political parties, has one president. He is the spokesman and the international representative of Kenyans. The presidency unifies Kenyans as it is the one that symbolizes the aspirations and hopes of the people. 4. Education Education is a process of change that effectively promotes national unity. The national school curriculum aims at ensuring that pupils and students focus on the issues that unite them. 5. National language At independence the people of Kenya spoke different languages. Thus, it was difficult for the government of the day to communicate to all Kenyans at once. The need arose to have one national language. Kiswahili was largely used for trade at the Kenyan coast. It was given the status of a national language in 1975. The advantages of Kiswahili were that it was not a language that belonged to only one group of people, it was derived from Arabic and a few coastal languages. It was thus not a white man's language. Since it was a common trade language, it was easy for Kenyans to learn it. Its grammatical rules were fairly similar to those of many local languages, making it easier to grasp. 6. National activities Having a common culture contributes to the unity of a nation. The way in which people do things and the socially acceptable bodies that govern how things are done define the culture of a people. Some of these national activities entail national holidays, trade fairs, games and sports and disaster management. 7. Mass Media Mass media is a term used to refer to newspapers, magazines, television and radio. These are modes of communication that are used to get information to a large number of people at the same time. Thank you for watching and listening.
