Faithful gathered in prayer in St Peter's Square on April 21 after the news of Pope Francis' death. Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died on Monday after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. Francis' death came as a shock after he had been driven around St. Peter's Square in an open-air popemobile to greet cheering crowds on Easter. Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected pope on March 13, 2013 and was known for his concern for the poor.
