We originally planned to visit China Changbai Mountain South Scenic Area—only open for 4-5 months a year and with far fewer visitors—yet stumbled upon this China-North Korea border town, Changbai County, 50 kilometers away. It shares the same name as Changbai Mountain, China’s most famous active volcano. The nearest Chinese city to Changbai County is over 200 kilometers away. While over 70,000 people are officially registered here, according to locals, fewer than 10,000 actually live here.We were happy to get such an up-close view of North Korea, one of the world’s most mysterious countries.
