The third-person action-adventure game takes place five years after the events of its predecessor, The Last of Us, in a post-apocalyptic United States. The player assumes the role of Ellie. Alongside Ellie, the game also tells the story of Abby, who is also playable. Even before its release, The Last of Us Part II received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Within the first three days, over four million copies of the game were sold—a feat previously unmatched by any PlayStation 4 exclusive. In 2013, a Cordyceps epidemic nearly destroyed human civilization. Inhaling the fungal spores or being bitten by infected individuals transforms people into aggressive, instinct-driven mutants within days. However, 20 years after the outbreak, one individual, 14-year-old Ellie, developed immunity after being bitten. The rebel group known as the Fireflies then asked the smuggler Joel to escort Ellie from Boston to a hospital in Utah, where a vaccine for all of humanity was to be developed from the mutated fungus in Ellie's brain.
