Devil May Cry 2 (PS2) (As Dante) - Part 1 (No Commentary)

It's nearly Halloween so here's some real horror: I'm back. Worse yet, I've brought Devil May Cry 2. Don't worry, DMC3 will resume soon (already recording again) but I had this sitting on my hard drive in the mean time so we're gonna get a double feature of the series starting here now. Join me on this horrifying adventure across two discs of terror as we see Dante, and newcomer Lucia, and also Trish because she's the only good character to play in the game, tackle all sorts of occult threats. For this part we're covering missions 1-3. Devil May Cry 2 is often considered one of the worst games of all time. To be blunt, that's extreme hyperbole, it's really not that bad just very boring, but it's sandwiched between DMC1 and 3 so it comes out looking so much worse than it truly is in comparison to many hack n slash games of the time. That's not to talk it up though, it's boring, the combat kinda sucks, and the overall vibe of the game is very at odds with the series. To get to the biggest issue of DMC2, we need to talk about the combat. The game uses this bizarre input method where you have a constant soft lock and pushing a direction after a certain attack in your combo changes you moves. Hard locking gives the usual launcher or stinger, and using R2 you can lock off which is necessary for some puzzles. There are other weird details like using lock on in the air makes you do these kick moves, or right on landing you do a shoulder tackle. The problem is that aside from being completely different than 1's combat system, there's no explanation for this in game, or really in the manual to my memory. Combine that with a borderline useless move list menu, and no new moves to unlock (everything remains the same from minute 1 so you never learn your kit), and it's a confusing mess. On top of all that, enemies barely try to fight, guns are overpowered as Hell, and the environments are massive which means escaping foes is trivially easy. The story has some neat ideas on paper but in execution you could be forgiven for thinking there is no story. There's like 4 cutscenes the whole game, and Dante only has like a combined total of a minute of dialogue. All the plot is really in Lucia's disc so don't expect much until then. Considering DMC1 was rather light on story already, it's almost an achievement how much it was reduced here. To give some praise for something in this game, I like how it handles alternate costumes compared to the first. You can select them when loading your save with the shoulder buttons as opposed to them being locked to a save, so we'll see them all here. I beat DMD before so I have everything, but just use cheats honestly because it's not worth the headache, trust me. You can save with cheats in 2 HD as well unlike 3 HD because even they know it sucks. Anyway, that's it for now, but I actually have another surprise. With this and DMC3 I'm planning on trying out recording an audio commentary over the games. I might be uploading the one for 2 later here, it's the same video as this just with extra commentary audio. We'll see how that goes, I figure since the first attempt is gonna be bad might as well start with the bad game to match. Whatever happens there, I hope you enjoy this in the meantime and have a good one! == TIMESTAMPS == 00:00 Game intro 01:57 Story intro cutscene 04:19 Mission 1 Start 04:30 Mission 1 intro cutscene 04:54 Mission 1 06:21 Agonof Inis intro cutscene 06:40 Mission 1 (continued) 08:11 Secret Room 1 09:16 Mission 1 (continued) 10:01 Secret Room 2 10:55 Mission 1 (continued) 13:47 Misra intro cutscene 14:05 Mission 1 (continued) 17:26 Mission 1 end cutscene 18:00 Mission 1 results 18:09 Mission 2 intro cutscene 20:00 Mission 2 start 20:27 Mission 2 21:32 Secret Room 3 22:41 Mission 2 (continued) 26:55 Secret Room 4 28:17 Mission 2 (continued) 29:23 Goatling intro cutscene 29:31 Mission 2 (continued) 30:01 Upgrade cutscene (get used to this one...) 30:21 Mission 2 (continued) 30:37 Mission 2 results 30:44 Mission 3 start 31:16 Mission 3 33:00 Goatling's flame cutscene 33:11 Mission 3 (continued) 34:02 Secret Room 5 34:47 Mission 3 (continued) 35:08 Orangguerra intro cutscene 35:30 Boss Fight: Orangguerra 36:04 Mission 3 (continued) 36:29 Mission 3 results
