A KONE TMS50e traction elevator from 1997 in a residential apartments building, the immediate neighbor to the one I live. My first time finding a 100% original 50e in a residential building, the few others of these that I have been on were in small commercial buildings, and the residential ones, modernized. I've been wanting to film one like this for many years... This is what that the ones in my tower looked like before being modded by Otis. The two towers were built by the same construction firm at the same time and are similar in a lot of things, including elevators. This entire neighborhood is predominantly occupied by basic-level towers from the 1990s, many had the Kone 50e for their elevators. The other elevator: • 1997 KONE TMS50e (mod. Soutec) Traction El... Like in most apartment buildings, there are two elevators, one for passengers and one for service, side by side, identical to each other. The passenger car got a generic mod a couple years ago by Soutec, a local company. You can see it hear it's new VF-driven machine running besides in this video. This is the service elevator, left completely original, exactly the same that the modernized one was before. Just that it's the only car allowed for transporting larger loads such as furniture, appliances, etc. during movings. The cab is pretty small, and still original except for the new ceiling panel with LED lights. Simple design, the side and back walls were plastered with a dark gray color film. Not the best choice for an elevator that often carries things like furniture, which led to those scratches in the wall from things rubbing against it, could use a mat padding like every building does. Strangely, the landing doors lack the additional arm on top, connecting to the wall frame. Only the door on the ground (P) is a different design, with stainless steel, glass visor and silver handles, a not very common version. Fixtures are the default Series 100 (made by Sectron Parts) that Kone used throughout the 1990s, small COP with only basic controls. In good condition, with the expected signs of age and usage. A great solution to counter that is on the buttons on the COP, recently fitted with acrylic squares over them, that perfectly imitate their original look. Gotta say, it's excellent, I liked that a lot! Even better than the original, I'd say. Numbers wearing out, and buttons losing their already weak click/loosening is common with these. There's a fan button, but the fan itself was removed when they put the new ceiling panel below. BOMB doesn't blow up the elevator, it's just short for BOMBeiro (firefighter), fire service key. The directional LEDs on the hall call stations don't work anymore. That black board with the capacity above the COP is from ThyssenKrupp, they installed it on all elevators on their maintenance back in the early 2000s. In this one, it was after Kone sold their national operations to (then) ThyssenSûr in 1999 and maintenance went over to them. Following the rule, yet another Kone I come across that's missing the logo on the COP. I've never found one that still has it there, don't know why this strange little phenomenon happens to me, independent of who's mantaining. The only branding I do find on these is the logo engraving on the door arm, but this one lacks exactly those... Performance is like any other TMS50e, very fast travel speed that these are known for (even when compared a lot to older and newer models), big bumps when starting and stopping, and decently fast leveling. Ride is not bad, feels actually quite smooth even with the heavy vibration on the rails, it just resonates inside the cab. Only the bumps are a downer, strong and uncomfortable most times, all of these MR12 machines are like this by default. The motor is very silent, still has a bit of the MR12's classic sound to it, but much quieter, it also doesn't make the typical brake bangs. Door operator is fast and very smooth, like all of these normally do. Operation is great, the system still runs as original, free of glitches, very responsive, and efficient for handling calls. Maintenance is on the hands of said small local company, but reportedly they're doing a good job, no complaints about their service. Specifications: Manufacturer: KONE Maintainer: Soutec (local company) Model: TMS50e Fixtures: Sectron Series 100 (24V/gray) Type: Passenger Residential Hoisting: Traction Doors: 2-speed sliding, manual landing doors Capacity: 450 kg/6 persons (apx. 1000 lbs.) In Service: 1997 Floors Served: 12 (SS - P* - 1/10) Controller: Kone TMS50e Electronic, 2-speed Motor System: Kone MR12 AC-driven machine Rating: 10/10 - Awesome elevator, and one type that I've been trying to find for a long time. Still runs and operates very well, conservation state is pretty decent. That solution for "renovating" the worn out buttons is pretty interesting and well done! Thankfully they chose to spare this one from the mod! Shot: October 18, 2022 Camera: Samsung Galaxy A52 © 2022 L. Naves
